A series of torandoes ripped through central Tennessee on the 9th of December, killing six people, injuring dozens, and causing widespread damage. At least one of the tornadoes was rated EF-3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, a storm that rolled through Montgomery County, about 50 miles northwest of Nashville. Significant damage was reported in Clarksville, near Nashville, where Mayor Joe Pitts was commented it could be up to two weeks before power was restored to the whole community. Overall, 80,000 customers lost power in Tennessee following the round of storms. Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell noted 20 buildings destroyed in the greater Nashville area, with "countless others (having) sustained significant damage". This outbreak comes almost two years to the day after another major tornado outbreak in this part of the U.S., in which nearly three dozen tornadoes were spawned.
