Philippines Landfall | Summary
Posting Date: July 26, 2023, 2:00:00 PM
Typhoon Doksuri (Egay in the Philippines) has made two landfalls over the northern Philippines over the past day, bringing high winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding to parts of northern Luzon and nearby islands. The first landfall, early Wednesday, was over Fuga Island in Aparri, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h (~109 mph), followed by aa second landfall hours later over Dalupiri Island, Calayan, Cagayan, per PAGASA. 12,000 people were evacuated from Cagayan ahead of the storm, and a handful of domestic flights were cancelled as well. The storm has produced prodigious rainfall as well, with up to 400 mm (~16 inches) forecast for areas which line up with the cyclone’s primary rainbands, and resulting so far as of this writing in more than a dozen landslides. Storm surges of up to 3 meters (9-10 feet) were forecast. Early damage reports include some tin roofs torn off of homes, likely crop damage, and damaged ceilings and doors at the Laoag International Airport in Laoag, Ilocos Norte.
ALERT™ subscribers can download similar stochastic event (SSE) IDs for Typhoon Doksuri (Egay) from the Downloads tab of this posting on the ALERT website. Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on Doksuri’s key meteorological parameters at approach to and landfalls in the Philippines, in particular central pressure, storm track, and forward speed. They should only be used with exposures in the Philippines.
Doksuri remains a powerful typhoon as of this writing, with a minimum central pressure around 940 mb and maximum sustained 10-minute winds around 45 m/s (~100 mph), per the Japan Meteorological Agency. The storm is expected to pass south of Taiwan today on a northwestward trajectory toward mainland China, where landfall is expected on Friday. Doksuri is expected to weaken some over that period, but should remain at typhoon strength as it reaches the coast of China.
Assuming Doksuri makes landfall in mainland China as a typhoon, Verisk plans to provide an additional set of similar stochastic events for its impacts there on Monday morning, July 31, Asia-Pacific time.
