The storm’s maximum sustained winds are estimated to be 75 mph (120 km/h), which puts Michael just over hurricane intensity. Michael’s minimum central pressure is 982 mb, and it is moving northward at a slow 7 mph (11 km/h).

Watches are now in effect along the U.S. Gulf Coast. A storm surge watch is in effect from Navarre, Florida, to Anna Maria Island, Florida, including Tampa Bay. A hurricane watch is in effect from the Alabama-Florida border to the Suwannee River, Florida. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Suwannee River to Anna Maria Island, Florida, including Tampa Bay, and from the Alabama-Florida border to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

Michael is expected to continue northward at a slightly faster pace over the next day as it nears the Florida Panhandle. Hurricane Michael is expected to rapidly intensify over the next 24 hours, and is forecast to be a major hurricane when it reaches the northeastern Gulf of Mexico sometime on Wednesday, October 10. After making landfall, Michael is forecast to accelerate toward the northeast, cross the coastal southeastern U.S., then become an extratropical low-pressure system on Saturday somewhere over the North Atlantic.
