A moderate earthquake with a computed moment magnitude of 5.7 (5.6 Mb) occurred on Sunday, August 1, 1999, near the California-Nevada border. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 135 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. The town nearest the epicenter, Goldfield, Nevada, is about 25 miles away to the north northwest. The earthquake occurred in a sparsely populated area. There have been no reports of damage or injuries.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, this was a shallow event, with an estimated focal depth of 7.0 kilometers. It is not yet known on what fault the earthquake occurred. The computed magnitude may change as data from other monitoring stations comes in.
