A moderate earthquake occurred today, September 7, 1999, about 15 miles northwest of Athens, Greece. The US Geological Survey has issued a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 for this event, and a shallow focal depth of 10.0 km. The epicenter of the earthquake was between the suburb of Menidi and the sparsely-populated national park, Mount Parnes.
Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 100 buildings have collapsed and 22 people killed. In Metamorphosi, the Ricomex detergent factory collapsed trapping 70 people. In most parts of Athens, electricity and telephone services have been suspended.
The AIR earthquake modeling team has collected the most current information available from the USGS. Unfortunately, the available information is limited in the early aftermath of this earthquake and there is uncertainty as to the true parameters of the event. AIR will closely monitor information as it comes in and will post more information as necessary.
