The quake struck a sparsely populated area of the Mexican west coast off the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Early reports of damage include the collapse of buildings and façades. Buildings swayed in Mexico City, which is about 650 km away from the epicenter. The state-owned petroleum company, Pemex, reported that the temblor caused one of its oil refineries to catch fire; the fire was extinguished. A hospital dedicated to caring for COVID-19 patients experienced structural damage. Two deaths and several injuries have been reported.
