An M6.0 earthquake with a focal depth of 8.7 km struck 7 km north-northwest of Thrapsanón, Crete, Greece at 06:17 UTC on September 27 (10:17 a.m. on September 27, local time). The quake appears to have caused mainly minor damage, with most of the impact on older and unoccupied buildings in the region. One man died when the dome of a small chapel in the town of Arkalochori, 30 km from Crete's main city Heraklion, caved in during renovation work, according to local police, with at least 20 others reported injured. A series of aftershocks with magnitudes as high as 4.8 have followed the initial temblor. A team of 20 civil engineers from the general directorate of Greece’s Infrastructure and Transport Ministry has been sent to assess the structural damage and assist in relief efforts.
AIR will continue to monitor the impacts from this event, though no further ALERTs are planned at this time.
