M7.0 Acapulco, Mexico

An M7.0 earthquake with a focal depth of 20 km struck 20.7 km northeast of Acapulco de Juárez, Guerrero, Mexico, at 01:47 UTC on September 8 (8:45 p.m. on September 7, local time).

More than 90 aftershocks have been reported in the resort town of Acapulco, Mexico, where people slept in cars and on the streets overnight. Some damage has been reported at Acapulco International Airport, which remained closed the morning following the quake. A local hospital reported wall cracking, and some roadways were blocked by landslides; gas leaks have also been reported in the area. Although alarms sounded as far away as Mexico City, more than 300 km northeast of the epicenter, no damage has been reported there.
