A magnitude 6.6 earthquake has struck Sichuan Province in China, near the city of Kangding, roughly 200 km southeast of the city of Chengdu. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km, making its impacts felt over a wide area. The location and fault mechanisms obtained by USGS and Institute of Earthquake Forecasting, CEA indicates that the earthquake occurred as the result of shallow strike-slip faulting, most likely related to the Xianshuihe fault.

The quake is reported to have killed at least 66 people, 28 of those in the city of Ya’an, and another 38 in neighboring Ganzi prefecture, with more than 250 reported injuries. In Luding, near the epicenter, communications and water mains were badly damaged. As of this writing, China State TV is reporting 243 homes destroyed and another 13,010 damaged, along with a small handful of hotels and tourist buildings. This temblor occurred about 175 km from the epicenter of the 2008 M7.9 event, which killed nearly 70,000 people and stands as the landmark event in this region in recent history.
