A series of strong earthquakes, led by a magnitude 7.4 temblor, struck Taiwan on Wednesday morning local time. The largest quake started at 7:58am local time at a depth of 34.8 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quakes were centered about twenty kilometers south of Hualien City, whose population of approximately 100,000 makes it easily the largest city near the quake’s source. The surrounding county is home to an additional 240,000 residents, mainly in outlying mountainous areas. At least nine people have been killed, and nearly 1,000 injuries have been reported as of Wednesday morning, U.S. eastern time.

Compatible with Touchstone® and Touchstone Re™, the SSEs were selected based on the event’s location, magnitude, and depth. They should only be used with exposures in Taiwan.

A damaged building in Hualien City (Associated Press)
The worst impacts have been reported in and around Hualien City. Images on social media show multiple commercial buildings collapsed or displaced from their foundations. One report indicated at least twenty-six houses had been damaged or destroyed; another noted approximately 100 buildings damaged or destroyed – these figures are expected to rise in the coming days as the full scope of the damage is uncovered. However, while the worst damage appears to have occurred in Hualien County, the quake was felt across Taiwan, and minor structural damage to buildings has also been reported in Taipei, well to the north of the epicenter. Across the country, nearly 90,000 residents were without power as of Friday afternoon local time.
The quake triggered a tsunami warning for Okinawa and parts of Taiwan. While waves of up to 0.5 meters were reported (0.3 meters for Okinawa), no significant tsunami damage has been reported, and all warnings have now been lifted.
The Verisk ALERT and Earthquake modeling teams are studying the impacts of this quake, and will provide an update on next steps, if any, later this week. In the meantime, please contact your Verisk representative with any additional questions about this event.
