A magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck near Bogo City in the Philippine province of Cebu on Tuesday night. Bogo itself was the worst affected city from this event – homes, businesses, and bridges saw structural damage, including the collapse of a 100-year-old church. In San Remigio, a sports complex hosting a basketball game collapsed, killing one person and injuring several others. Elsewhere, in Daanbantayan, the Municipal Hall showed a large crack down an exterior wall, and the facade of the St. Rita church saw significant damage. More than 500,000 persons were in areas of very strong shaking (defined as Modified Mercalli Index, or MMI = 7), with another 2.9 million, including the city of Cebu, subject to strong shaking (MMI = 6), per the USGS.
