A very strong extratropical cyclone swept across Northern Europe this weekend. The storm formed in the early morning hours of Friday, December 3, west of Ireland. By later in the morning on Friday, the storm had moved into the North Sea as it continued to intensify. Late on Friday, the maximum intensity was achieved as the storm passed through Denmark, the country hardest hit by the storm.
By Saturday afternoon, the storm had dissipated. To view an animated time history of the storm, see on the map below.
The AIR wind modeling team is currently generating loss scenarios for this storm. These scenarios will be posted Tuesday. Our initial simulations indicate that losses will be the highest in Denmark, Germany, and the U.K.
AIR meteorologists note that our forecast model indicates additional storms could affect the U.K. later this week.
