Flooding is affecting parts of northern Europe this week, driven primarily by intense, long-duration precipitation. The regions of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, along with parts of Belgium and the Netherlands, have been most affected thus far. From the Saarland to the Vorderpfalz, local rainfall totals exceeded double the monthly average for the month of May in some areas. As flooding peaked on Friday, one gauge (Steinalben/Queidersbach) exceeded the 50-year flood threshold, and in Saarland the situation was similar, with several gauges reporting major (20- to 50-year) water levels. Saarland state premier Anke Rehlinger said authorities still did not have a complete picture of the damage, but it was expected to be “considerable”.
With more rain in the forecast for the coming days in the affected areas, this event may continue to evolve as this week progresses. Verisk’s ALERT and Flood modeling teams are closely monitoring, and will provide an additional update on next steps, if any, sometime before the end of this week. In the meantime, mapping for the flooding in Saarland is underway via the Copernicus Emergency Management Rapid Mapping product.
