Tornadoes hit southwestern Georgia early Monday, killing at least 18 people, and injuring hundreds more. At about 12:30 a.m., a tornado cut a path one mile wide through a residential area with many mobile homes in the town of Camilla, located in Mitchell County some 200 miles south of Atlanta. Preliminary reports indicate that 11 people have died in Mitchell County, and an estimated 50 to 60 homes were destroyed. The path left by the tornado was about five miles long.
Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes declared a state of emergency in Colquitt, Tift, Mitchell, and Grady counties, where more deaths occurred. A tractor-trailer truck was blown on its side and a brick house was lifted off its foundations. Mitchell County Hospital treated at least 100 people for injuries, but was forced to send many to nearby cities due to a power outage.
The violent weather that hit southwestern Georgia with at least five tornadoes was part of a storm system that also hit Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and northeastern Florida before moving into the Carolinas.
AIR will continue to monitor data and will post additional information as necessary.
