Two tornadoes hit Fort Worth, Texas, just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28. Four deaths and more than 100 injuries were reported. Dozens were left homeless and thousands were still without power this morning. The tornadoes were accompanied by torrential rains and hail. Tarrant County was declared a federal disaster area today.
Tornado sirens were heard a scant four minutes before the first storm struck, in the northern areas of the city. About 15 minutes later, the second storm hit the museum district west of downtown and swept into the downtown area, shattering windows in high rise office buildings. The 35-story Bank One Tower suffered extensive damage and windows were blown out on nearly every floor of the 8-story Cash America International Building. The storms also flattened stores and warehouses, overturned vehicles, and ripped the roof off a church. The storm continued along the ground on an easterly track, passing through nearby Arlington and Grand Prairie. The damage was apparently intensified by the amount of time the tornado remained on the ground, an estimated 15 to 30 minutes.
AIR will post more information as necessary.
