A significant early season severe weather system moved across the U.S. over the weekend, spawning dozens of tornadoes, causing a trail of damage in several southern and central states, and killing at least 39 people.
The first impacts from this event came on Friday, with hundreds of wind and hail reports across Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa, along with several reports of tornadoes. An EF-3 tornado was reported Friday evening near Ozark, MO. Likewise, to the south, strong tornadoes were spawned across parts of Arkansas and Mississippi, including two EF-4s, one near Larkin, AR, and the other causing significant damage in the town of Diaz. Storms continued through the southeast on Saturday, with 46 more tornado reports, largely across Alabama and Mississippi. Activity was more focused in the northeast on Sunday, with hundreds of high wind reports extending northward from West Virginia through western Pennsylvania and into western New York state.
