Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: August 27, 1999, 10:00:00 AM
As of 1400 EDT, Friday, August 27, 1999, Hurricane Dennis is centered about 200 miles southeast of Grand Bahama Island. The storm is moving in a west-northwesterly direction at 7 mph with a central barometric pressure of 991 mb. Although Dennis is a minimal Category 1 hurricane with wind speeds of 80 mph, it has become somewhat better organized and further strengthening is forecast over the next 24 hours. Hurricane warnings have been posted for the northwestern Bahama Islands.
The AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has collected the available information regarding the meteorological parameters and likely track of this storm, and are running simulations representing a variety of possible scenarios, using a range of potential storm track and intensity variables. Currently, our estimates indicate that insured losses in the Bahamas are not likely to exceed $50 million. The scenario that produces losses in this range puts Dennis on a path that directly crosses both Great Abaco and Grand Bahama Islands.
Projections indicate that the hurricane will continue to move slowly while gradually turning to the north and north-northwest over the course of the next several days. Current forecasts suggest that, as the storm moves towards the US, it will parallel the Florida coastline. It is important to point out, however, that there is still a high degree of uncertainty with respect to the future track of this storm.
CATRADER clients can now download event sets representing the entire range of simulated scenarios for the Bahamas. AIR will continue to monitor this storm as it progresses and will be posting additional information as necessary.
