Pre-Landfall 3 | Summary
Posting Date: August 30, 1999, 9:00:00 AM
As of 1300 EDT, Monday, August 30, 1999, Hurricane Dennis was centered about 95 miles east-southeast of Cape Lookout, NC and 75 miles south of Cape Hatteras, NC. The storm is moving in an east northeasterly direction at 18 mph with a central barometric pressure of 969 mb. Dennis is currently a Category 2 hurricane with wind speeds of 95 mph. Hurricane warnings remain in effect for the North Carolina coast.
Projections indicate that, although the eye of the storm will remain offshore, this is a large storm system and will stay sufficiently close enough to the coast to produce strong winds. While little change in intensity is anticipated over the next 24 hours, the forward speed is expected to diminish. There is still some degree of uncertainty regarding the future track of the storm. Some computer models project Dennis returning to the coast later this week.
Using the most recent information regarding the current meteorological parameters and probable track of this storm, the AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has run new simulations and resulting scenarios have now been posted. Because Dennis is not expected to make actual landfall, the losses will be minimal.
CATMAP/2 and CATRADER clients can now download new event sets representing simulated scenarios for the US. AIR will continue to monitor this storm and will post additional information as necessary.
