Pre-Landfall 4 | Summary
Posting Date: August 31, 1999, 10:00:00 AM
As of 1400 EDT, Tuesday, August 31, 1999, Hurricane Dennis was centered about 135 miles east of Cape Hatteras, NC. As was projected by several numerical weather forecasting models, the storm has taken a turn back toward the continental US and is currently moving in a westerly direction at just 5 mph. Central barometric pressure is 983 mb. Dennis is currently a Category 1 hurricane with wind speeds of 75 mph.
The storm is expected to make another run at the North Carolina coast, where hurricane warnings remain in effect. There is still, however, a high degree of uncertainty regarding both the future track of this storm and whether or not further strengthening will take place.
Using the most recent information regarding the current meteorological parameters and probable track of this storm, the AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has run new simulations. Based on current information, the projected losses are expected to be minimal.
CATRADER clients can now download new event sets representing simulated scenarios for the US. AIR will continue to monitor this storm and will post additional information as necessary.
