Pre-Landfall 3 | Summary
Posting Date: October 21, 1999, 1:00:00 PM
As of 17:00 EDT, Thursday, October 21, 1999, tropical storm Jose is located about 55 miles north northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Jose is currently moving in a west-northwesterly direction at 9 mph. Maximum sustained winds are now 65 mph and central barometric pressure is 993 mb.
Jose's intensity diminished significantly overnight as it interacted with the islands. It was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane around midnight and further downgraded to tropical storm this morning.
The AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has run new simulations based on Jose's actual track, as well as current information regarding the storm's meteorological parameters. Jose took a slightly more westerly track and came closer to Puerto Rico than was projected last night. However, because the storm weakened considerably, losses should be minimal. AIR estimates that insured losses in the Caribbean should not exceed $50 million.
