Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: September 22, 1999, 4:00:00 AM
As of 0800 EDT, September 22, Super Typhoon Bart was centered at 26.3N, 127.1E, near Naha, Okinawa. Bart is currently moving in a northerly direction at about 5 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 160 mph, making this a super typhoon, or a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
The storm's forward speed is expected to increase steadily, taking Bart on a north-northeast track toward the Korea Strait and then across Japan. Increasing vertical wind shear and interaction with Japan and Korea should weaken the Bart during the next 36 hours.
The AIR tropical cyclone modeling team will continue to monitor Super Typhoon Bart and will post additional information as necessary.
