Post Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: November 21, 1999, 4:00:00 PM
By Sunday evening, November 22, the remnants of Hurricane Lenny had passed the Leeward Islands and were moving in an east-northeasterly direction out to sea. On Thursday, November 18, AIR posted event sets and a range of scenarios. These were based on the then current meteorological parameters and actual track, as well as Lenny's most likely future track.
Hurricane Lenny's strength diminished throughout the weekend. Sustained wind speeds were 90 mph at 10:00 am on Friday, but had dropped to 60 mph by 9:00 pm that evening. By yesterday evening, Hurricane Lenny had been downgraded to a tropical depression.
The storm took a somewhat more easterly track than was previously expected, as it passed the Virgin Islands. Because the eye of the storm stayed to the east of the islands, they did not experience the strongest winds of the storm. As a result, the new simulations result in lower losses. Based on the best estimates of final storm parameters and final storm track, we do not expect losses to exceed $750 million, and they are likely to be in the lower end of the range posted last Thursday.
This will be our final posting on Lenny.
