Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: October 2, 2000, 7:00:00 AM
As of 11:00 a.m. EDT the center of Hurricane Keith was located 35 miles east-northeast of Belize City. A hurricane watch remains in effect for the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize from Cabo Coteche southward to Monkey River Town.
Over the weekend, Keith was rated a Category 4 hurricane, but has since dropped to Category 1. The storm's maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph with higher gusts. Minimum central pressure is 979 mb. At present, Keith is almost stationary, and little motion is expected for the next 12 to 24 hours. Keith is expected to weaken to tropical storm status later today. The storm is predicted to move slowly to the northwest over the next day or so and move into the Gulf of Mexico by midweek. Forecasts indicate the storm might strengthen as it moves northwest through the Gulf of Mexico, possibly affecting the U.S. Gulf Coast toward the end of the week.
AIR will continue to monitor the progress of this storm closely and will post additional information as necessary.
