As of 8:00 a.m. EDT, Super Typhoon Saomai was located approximately 155 miles east southeast of Okinawa, Japan. Maximum sustained winds are 150 mph, with higher gusts. Maximum wave height is expected to reach 45 feet. Saomai is currently tracking northwestward at 8 mph. Forecasters currently expect Saomai to track northwestward through the next 48 hours and to maintain its current intensity over the next 12 hours. The storm is then expected to begin to weaken as it encounters vertical wind shear. The storm is not expected to pose a threat to mainland Japan.
