Landfall | Summary
Posting Date: July 8, 2000, 4:00:00 AM
As of 0800 EDT, Saturday, July 8, 2000, tropical storm Kirogi is located about 128 nautical miles east-northeast of Misawa, Japan, after raking Japan's Pacific coast earlier today. The storm's forward speed has been about 24 mph over the last six hours. Kirogi is now a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of about 63 mph and gusts of up to 81 mph. The system is expected to continue to weaken as cooler sea temperatures influence the storm's dynamics.
The typhoon swept up eastern Japan, brushing Tokyo with winds and torrential rains, leaving at least two dead, flooding at least 300 homes in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and burying homes in landslides outside the city. Power lines were knocked out in several parts of central Japan, cutting electricity to around 20,000 homes. Domestic flights were canceled and some bullet train and rail services in Tokyo were suspended, according to news reports.
The AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has collected currently available information about the meteorological parameters of this storm and has run new simulations based on this information. Because the typhoon stayed offshore, estimated losses are lower than estimates based on the earlier projected tracks.
Please note that we may update these estimates once the actual track becomes known. It is also important to remember that there is a degree of uncertainty in the values of the meteorological parameters of this storm.
Our latest scenarios may be viewed by all clients by accessing the Event Scenario page of this Web site. Please note that, at this time, both CATMAP and CATRADER clients can download event sets representing the entire range of simulated scenarios.
