Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: July 6, 2000, 10:00:00 AM
As of 1400 EDT, Thursday, July 6, 2000, Typhoon Kirogi is moving toward Japan at a forward speed of 15 mph and with maximum sustained winds of 86 mph. It is expected to affect coastal areas near Tokyo by Saturday morning. The typhoon is reported to have been responsible for 12 deaths and a half a million people left homeless in the Philipines over the last several days.
Kirogi became a typhoon on July 3rd, when its sustained wind speeds reached about 75 mph with gusts of 92 mph. By July 5th, it was classed as a Category 4 typhoon with sustained winds of 132 mph, gusting to 161 mph. Kirogi has since weakened and is now a Category 1 storm. Further weakening is expected as the storm moves into an environment of increased vertical wind shear.
Using the most recent information regarding the meteorological parameters of this storm, the AIR tropical cyclone modeling team have completed hundreds of simulations representing a variety of assumptions about the storm’s future track and intensity. The resulting scenarios and ranges of loss estimates are based on Typhoon Kirogi tracking somewhere between a landfall near Kumano in Mie-ken Prefecture and bypassing Japan to the east. The storm’s intensity could range from a minimal Category 1 to tropical storm status.
CATRADER clients may view scenarios by accessing the Event Scenario page of this Web site. In addition, CATRADER clients can now download event sets representing the entire range of simulated scenarios.
AIR will continue to monitor Typhoon Kirogi closely and will post additional information as necessary.
