Landfall | Summary
Posting Date: November 6, 2001, 5:00:00 AM
As of 04:00 EST, Tuesday, November 6, 2001, Hurricane Michelle was located about 553 miles (890 km) southwest of Bermuda and moving to the east-northeast at about 21 mph (33 km/h). Maximum sustained winds have remained near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts, but some weakening is expected in the next 24 hours, as Michelle loses its tropical characteristics and becomes extratropical later today. Michelle remains a Category 2 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, with hurricane force winds extending outward up to 125 miles (205 km), and tropical storm force winds out to 290 miles (465 km).
The U.S. mainland was largely spared from the effects of Michelle, although there were reports of light damage on the east coast of Florida from wind gusts and flooding. Despite being in the direct path of the storm, the Bahamas also escaped major damage according to early reports. However, Michelle is considered the worst storm to hit Cuba since 1944, knocking out electrical power and causing severe damage to crops and infrastructure.
Using the most recent information about the meteorological parameters of this storm, the AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has run dozens of simulations. Representative scenarios and loss estimates for the Bahamas can now be viewed on the Scenarios page of this web site. In addition, event sets for these scenarios are available for download by CATMAP®/2 and CATRADER® clients. This will be the final posting on Hurricane Michelle.
