Pre-Landfall 2 | Summary
Posting Date: November 5, 2001, 9:00:00 AM
As of 04:00 EST, Monday, November 5, 2001, Hurricane Michelle was located about 170 miles (275 km) southeast of Miami, Florida, and about 160 miles (260 km) southwest of Nassau, in the Bahamas. The storm is moving toward the northeast at about 17 mph (28 k/h) and forward speed is expected to increase during the next 24 hours. Michelle has weakened after passing over Cuba and is expected to weaken further. Currently the storm's maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph (160 k/h) with higher gusts, making this a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.
Michelle made landfall on the southwest coast of Cuba on Sunday with winds of more than 130 mph (209 k/h). The National Weather Service expects Michelle to move across the Bahamas and continue east toward Bermuda today. Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the eastern coast of Florida and the Florida Keys. Tropical storm force wind gusts and heavy rain are possible in eastern Florida and in the Bahamas Islands.
Using the most recent information about the meteorological parameters of this storm, the AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has run new simulations representing a variety of assumptions about the storm's future track. The resulting loss estimates suggest that US losses will be minimal.
CATRADER clients can now view wind speed and loss maps for the Caribbean on the Scenarios page of this web site. In addition, event sets representing the full range of simulated scenarios are available for download. The AIR tropical cyclone modeling team will continue to monitor this storm and post additional information as necessary.
