As of Friday, August 17, 2001, 8:00 a.m, EDT, typhoon Pabuk was located about 265 nautical miles southwest of the island of Iwo Jima. Current estimates put the typhoon’s maximum sustained wind speed of 86 mph (138 km/hr) with gusts up to 104 mph (167 km/h). The storm is moving toward the west-northwest at about 2 mph (3 km/h).
Pabuk is expected to approach the Ryukyu Islands and Okinawa in the next 48-60 hours. By August 20, the projected course shows the storm nearing Kyushu. The typhoon is expected to intensify over the next 72 hours. Maximum sustained wind speeds could reach as high as 138 mph (222 km/h) with gusts as high as 167 mph (269 km/h).
