As of Friday, September 7, 2001, 8:00 a.m. EDT, super typhoon Danas was located about 367 nautical miles northeast of the island of Iwo Jima. Current estimates put the typhoon's maximum sustained wind speed at 132 mph (213 km/h) with gusts up to 161 mph (259 km/h). The storm's eye is estimated at 12 nautical miles in diameter and cloud-filled. Danas is moving toward the northwest at about 16 mph (26 km/h).
Danas is expected to track west-northwestward to westward during the next 72 hours. By September 9, the projected course shows the storm nearing the island of Shikoku, south of Kyoto. The typhoon is expected to weaken slowly over the next 36 hours, but it may reintensify as it approaches Japan. Maximum sustained wind speeds could reach as high as 115 mph (185 km/h) with gusts as high as 144 mph (232 km/h) on Sunday.
