Pre-Landfall 2 | Summary
Posting Date: September 9, 2001, 8:00:00 AM
As of Sunday, September 9, 2001, 2:00 a.m. EDT, Typhoon Danas was located approximately 420 miles (675 km) south of Tokyo. The storm has weakened somewhat since AIR’s Friday posting and maximum sustained winds are now just under 110 mph (177 km/h), making this a strong Category 2 storm on the Saffir Simpson scale. Danas has been moving in a northwesterly direction at 15 mph (24 km/h) and is expected to continue tracking in that direction over the next 12 hours before turning first to the north and finally to the northeast.
Typhoon Danas is currently expected to make landfall sometime early Monday morning, EDT, just to the east of Ise Bay, near Hamamatsu, on Japan’s main island of Honshu. While most models indicate that Danas will maintain its current intensity up until the time of landfall, it should weaken rapidly thereafter as it proceeds across central Japan. As always, however, it is important to emphasize that there is considerable uncertainty surrounding both the future track and intensity of this storm.
Using the most recent information about the meteorological parameters of this storm, the AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has run several hundred simulations representing a variety of assumptions about the storm’s future track and intensity. Five scenarios of wind speeds and associated loss estimates are available to CATRADER clients on the Scenarios page of this web site. These scenarios are based on Danas making landfall as far west as Wakayama and just by-passing Tokyo to the east, and the storm’s intensity ranging from a strong Category 2 to weak Category 3 storm.
Note that loss estimates that appear on the Scenarios page represent insured loss and are denominated in Japanese Yen. CATRADER clients may also download event sets representing the full range of simulations.
AIR will continue to monitor Typhoon Danas closely and will post new information shortly after landfall.
