Pre-Landfall 3 | Summary
Posting Date: September 10, 2001, 6:30:00 AM
As of 05:00 EDT, Monday, September 10, 2001, Typhoon Danas was located approximately 224 miles (361 km) southwest of Tokyo. The storm has slowed and weakened since AIR’s Sunday posting and maximum sustained winds are now about 86 mph (139 km/h), making this a Category 1 storm on the Saffir Simpson scale. Danas has been moving northward at about 7 mph (11 km/h) and is expected to turn toward the northeast in the next 12 to 24 hours.
Typhoon Danas is currently expected to make landfall late Monday or early Tuesday on the main island of Honshu. Forecast models suggest the storm’s intensity will continue to diminish over the next 12 to 24 hours, much as Typhoon Pabuk’s did before landfall in August. After landfall, the storm should weaken rapidly.
AIR will continue to monitor Typhoon Danas closely and will post new information shortly after landfall.
