Pre-Landfall 4 | Summary
Posting Date: September 10, 2001, 10:00:00 AM
As of 14:00 EDT, Monday, September 10, 2001, Typhoon Danas was located approximately 100 miles (161 km) southwest of Yokohama, Japan. The storm is currently tracking northeastward at 9 mph (14.5 km/h) and is expected to continue in that direction over the next 12 hours.
Maximum sustained winds have continued to diminish and are currently estimated at 80 mph (148 km/h). Current track projections take Danas to the east of Tokyo, just brushing the coast and primarily affecting rural areas. Landfall is expected later this evening.
Because the storm is expected to weaken further and pass over a relatively sparsely populated region of Japan’s main island, the AIR tropical cyclone modeling team expects that insured losses resulting from this storm will be minimal.
Because there remains considerable uncertainty surrounding both the future track and the intensity of this storm, the team will continue to monitor the situation and post new information if necessary.
