As of 8:00 a.m. EDT, on Tuesday, October 1, Hurricane Lili, the fourth hurricane of the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season, was located over the southwest coast of the Isle of Youth, Cuba, or about 60 miles (90 km) east-southeast of Cabo Frances in western Cuba. Hurricane Lili is moving toward the west-northwest at about 13 mph (20 kph) and the center is expected to pass over western Cuba later today.
As of 8:00 a.m. maximum sustained winds are estimated near 85 mph (140 kph) with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outward to 25 miles (35 km) from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward to 140 miles (220 km). Minimum central pressure is currently estimated at 971 mb. Forecasters expect further strengthening over the next 24 hours, and Lili could become a Category 2 storm later today. The storm is expected to make landfall in about 72 hours somewhere along the Gulf coast.
The AIR hurricane team will continue to monitor events in the area and will post additional information about Lili as the situation develops.
