Pre-Landfall 5 | Summary
Posting Date: September 25, 2002, 3:02:00 PM
As of 5:00 p.m. EDT, on Wednesday, September 25, Tropical Storm Isidore was located about 215 miles (346 km) south of New Orleans, Louisiana. Isidore is moving toward the north-northwest at about 12 mph (19 kph). The storm is expected to continue moving to the north, possibly making landfall sometime after midnight tonight.
Maximum sustained winds are currently near 65 mph (105 kph), with higher gusts, and minimum central pressure is estimated at 989 mb. Isidore may strengthen somewhat before landfall, though it is unclear as to whether it will regain hurricane status. It is a very large system, however, and tropical storm force winds currently extend outward up to 315 miles (507 km).
Using the most recent information about the meteorological parameters of this storm, the AIR tropical cyclone modeling team has run dozens of simulations representing a variety of assumptions about the storm’s future track and intensity. The resulting scenarios and loss estimates suggest that insured losses from wind damage only will not exceed $200 million. It is important to note, however, that there is still considerable uncertainty about the future track and intensity of this storm. If Isidore strengthens significantly more than is currently forecast, losses may be higher.
The AIR hurricane team will continue to monitor events in the area and will post further information as necessary.
