Tropical Storm Erika, the fifth named storm of the 2003 Atlantic hurricane season, is expected to make landfall along the Texas coastline in the next 24 hours. As of 11 a.m. EDT Friday morning, August 15, Erika was positioned about 375 miles (600 km) east of Brownsville Texas, and moving toward the west at about 23 mph (37 kph). Some decrease in forward speed is expected. On this track, the center of Erika might reach southeast Texas or northeast Mexico by early Saturday morning.
Current maximum sustained winds are about 50 mph (85 kph) with higher gusts and minimum central pressure is estimated at 1008 mb. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm may strengthen during the next 24 hours and could reach the coast as a hurricane. A hurricane warning is in effect for the south Texas coast from Baffin Bay south to Brownsville and for northeastern Mexico from La Pesca northward to the U.S. border.
AIR will continue to monitor the situation and will post additional information as necessary.
