According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm could regain some strength over the next 24-48 hours and is likely to accelerate to the north after about 48 hours. A hurricane warning is in effect for Bermuda, where the closest approach of the storm is likely to be about 17 miles (27 km) west of the island at about 8 p.m. on Friday, September 5.
Fabian formed on August 27 as a tropical depression in the eastern Atlantic, about 470 miles (756 km) west of the Cape Verde Islands. The storm reached Category 4 intensity on August 31, with sustained wind speeds of 135 mph (215 kph). By September 3, Fabian had become a Category 3 storm.
The AIR hurricane team will continue to monitor events in the area and will post additional information as necessary.
