Hurricane Isabel is expected to make landfall along the North Carolina coast around 2 p.m. this afternoon. As of 9:00 a.m. EDT (1400 UT) Thursday, September 18, Isabel was positioned about 85 miles (137 km) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and moving toward the north-northwest at about 16 mph (26 kph). This motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours.
A hurricane warning remains in effect from Cape Fear, North Carolina, northward to Chincoteague, Virginia. A tropical storm warning is in effect from Chincoteague, Virginia, north to Moriches Inlet New York. More than 300,000 residents of North Carolina and Virginia were asked to evacuate coastal regions
Current maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph (161 kph) with higher gusts. Minimum central pressure is estimated at 957 mb, making Isabel a Category 2 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Intensity Scale. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 345 miles (555 km).
