Landfall | Summary
Posting Date: August 8, 2003, 1:00:00 PM
As of Friday, August 8, 2003, at about 08:00 a.m. EDT, (1300 UTC) Typhoon Etau made landfall at Kochi, 17 miles (28 km) west-northwest of Cape Muruotomisaki on the island of Shikoku, and about 390 miles (628 km) west of Tokyo. Over the last 6 hours, Etau has tracked northeastward at 17 mph (28 kph). It is expected to cross the islands of Shikoku, Honshu, and then continue along the western shoreline of Honshu until it finally reaches Hokkaido in 48 hours.
Current estimates put the typhoon's maximum sustained wind speed at 104 mph (167 kph) at landfall with gusts up to 127 mph (204 kph), making the storm a Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Intensity Scale. The storm is expected to weaken over the next few days.
The typhoon grounded hundreds of flights and disrupted train and ferry service in the region. Power was cut off to at least 14,000 homes. Trees and rooftops have been damaged. More than 30 injuries have been reported so far, along with at least 2 deaths and 3 missing persons. Several thousands have been evacuated to emergency shelters and hundreds of homes have been reported flooded.
Using information about the current meteorological parameters of this storm, AIR has run numerous simulations through its Japanese typhoon model. Five scenarios, along with wind speed and loss maps have been posted on the Scenarios page of this web site and are available for viewing by all clients. Note that losses are denoted in Japanese Yen. In addition, event sets representing the full range of simulated scenarios are available for download.
AIR will continue to monitor the storm closely and will post additional information if necessary.
