Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: August 11, 2004, 9:00:00 AM
Tropical Storm Charley, the third named storm of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season, continues to gain strength. The storm is currently centered about 110 miles (175 km) southeast of Kingston, Jamaica and is expected to bypass the island.
As of 11 a.m., Charley is moving west-northwest at 18 mph (30 kph), and NOAA’s National Hurricane Center expects a gradual shift in direction to the northwest over the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 kph), with the National Hurricane Center forecasting Charley to achieve hurricane status later today. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the storm’s center and the reported minimum central pressure is 996 mb (29.41 in).
A hurricane watch is in effect for the Florida Keys from Dry Tortugas to Craig Key, as well as for the Cayman Islands and provinces of western Cuba. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch are in effect for Jamaica.
The AIR hurricane team is monitoring events in the area and will post additional information as necessary.
