Pre-Landfall 4 | Summary
Posting Date: August 13, 2004, 10:01:00 AM
Charley has strengthened rapidly in the last two hours and has shifted to a more southerly track. As a result of these unexpected changes in track and intensity, AIR has delayed its posting. A full posting, including event sets, will be available shortly.
We apologize for any inconvenience this delay has caused. Hurricane Charley has proven, once again, that there is always a great deal of uncertainty surrounding forecasts of meteorological parameters and storm track.
Meanwhile, as of the 2 p.m. advisory from NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Charley is now a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph (233 kph) and a minimum central pressure of 954 mb. Landfall is now expected near Charlotte Harbor, just north of Fort Meyers, later this afternoon.
A hurricane warning is in effect for the Florida coast from East Cape Sable north to the Steinhatchee River. Hurricane Charley is expected to bring a storm surge of 10-15 feet and 4 to 8 inches of rain. Coastal flooding and flash floods are a major concern.
