Post Landfall 3 | Summary
Posting Date: September 7, 2004, 9:00:00 AM
Please note that the CATRADER event sets available with this posting are for the U.S. and Bahamas combined. The CLASIC/2 clients should use the event sets from this morning’s posting, which are for the U.S. only. If any CLASIC/2 clients would like to analyze Bahamas losses in their software, please give us a call at 617-267-6645 and we will arrange to send you the necessary file.
Over the course of nearly a week, Frances made its way first through the Bahamas, then across Florida and into Georgia. A Category 4 hurricane as it skirted the islands of San Salvador and Cat, it weakened over Eleuthera and arrived at Grand Bahama as a Category 2, with winds of 105 mph. As it weakened, however, it also ground to a near halt, hovering over Grand Bahama for hours longer than forecast, pounding structures and dropping up to 20 inches of rain. AIR estimates that approximately 70% of the insured losses in the Bahamas occurred in Grand Bahama, the second most populated island and the home of Freeport, the country’s second commercial center. The AIR tropical cyclone modeling team currently estimates that total losses in the Bahamas will not exceed $400 million.
Frances arrived near Stuart, Florida at around 1:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday, September 5, as a Category 2 hurricane and with hurricane force winds extending close to 85 miles from the center of the storm. Nearly three times the size of Charley, Frances battered a large part of the Florida peninsula with high winds and heavy rain for nearly 24 hours as it made its way toward Tampa and out into the Gulf. Frances then arrived near St. Marks, on the Florida panhandle, as a tropical storm with winds of near 65 mph.
The AIR tropical cyclone team has run final scenarios using Hurricane Frances’ actual track and the available information about the storm’s meteorological parameters along the full length of its track through the Bahamas, across Florida, and up into Georgia. Five of these are now posted on the scenarios page of this website, where CATRADER® and CLASIC/2™ clients can view wind speed and loss maps.
In addition, CATRADER clients can download new event sets representing the full range of simulated scenarios for the Bahamas and U.S. combined. CLASIC/2 clients should use the event sets from this morning’s posting, which are for the U.S. only. CLASIC/2 clients who would like to analyze their Bahamas losses should call AIR at 617-267-6645.
This will be the final posting on Hurricane Frances.
