Pre-Landfall 8 | Summary
Posting Date: September 14, 2004, 10:00:00 AM
As of 2:00 p.m. EDT, Tuesday, September 14, 2004 Hurricane Ivan was located about 405 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi. The storm is now moving north-northwest at 8 mph, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) expects Ivan to continue this motion over the next 24 hours.
Maximum sustained winds have decreased and are now 140 mph with higher gusts, making Ivan a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale. Minimum central pressure has risen to 932 mb. The NHC anticipates that Ivan will continue to weaken for the next 12 hours or so. After that, the storm will pass over a localized area of warmer Gulf water and lower shear, which may result in Ivan restrengthening somewhat before projected landfall on Thursday.
Ivan remains a large system with hurricane force winds extending outward up to 100 miles from the center. Tropical storm force winds extend to 260 miles. A hurricane watch is in effect for the northern Gulf of Mexico coast from Morgan City, Louisiana eastward to St. Marks, Florida, including the greater New Orleans area.
The AIR tropical cyclone team has run new scenarios using information about Ivan’s latest meteorological parameters and the storm’s projected track. Five of these are now posted on the scenarios page of this website, where CATRADER® and CLASIC/2™ clients can view wind speed and loss maps. In addition, event sets representing the full range of simulated scenarios are now available for download. Please note that the losses provided in this posting are for the U.S. only.
As always, considerable uncertainty exists with respect to the future track and intensity of Hurricane Ivan. AIR continues to monitor Ivan closely and will post additional information tomorrow.
