Pre-Landfall 2 | Summary
Posting Date: August 11, 2004, 9:00:00 AM
As of 11 a.m. EDT, Wednesday, August 11, Tropical Storm Bonnie was located about 235 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River and moving toward the north-northeast at around 6 mph (10 km/hr).
Bonnie weakened overnight, but is beginning to regain some of its strength. Maximum sustained winds are currently near 50 mph (85 km/hr) with higher gusts. Minimum central pressure is estimated at 1000 mb. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours, though there are indications that, as the storm approaches the Florida coast, it will encounter shear that could weaken it again just before landfall.
Forecasts still call for Bonnie to make landfall on the Florida Panhandle sometime tomorrow morning, bringing with it 4 to 6 inches of rain on already saturated soils.
Please note that there is still considerable uncertainty surrounding the future track and meteorological parameters of this storm. Some models show a more eastward turn, while intensity at landfall will depend on how much strengthening occurs in the next 12-18 hours as the storm passes over a particularly warm eddy in the Gulf.
AIR will continue to monitor Bonnie and will post additional information as necessary.
