Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: July 6, 2005, 8:00:00 AM
Tropical Storm Dennis, the fourth named storm of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, is currently located in the Gulf of Mexico about 255 miles south-southeast of Port Au Prince, Haiti, and about 440 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.
As of 8 a.m. EDT, Dennis was moving west-northwest through the central Caribbean with a forward speed of 16 mph and is expected to continue this motion through the day. A lack of wind shear provides a favorable condition for Dennis to further strengthen to hurricane intensity later today.
Dennis currently has maximum sustained winds around 65 mph with gusts up to 75 mph. Tropical storm force winds extend to 85 miles from the center, with the minimum central pressure estimated at 994 mb.
A hurricane warning remains in effect for Jamaica, the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, the Cayman Islands, and eastern Cuba. A tropical storm warning remains in effect for the southern coast of the Dominican Republic.
Please note that there is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the future track and meteorological parameters of this storm. AIR will continue to monitor Dennis as it moves toward Jamaica and will post additional information as the storm develops.
