As of 8:00 a.m. EDT, Thursday, July 7, the center of Hurricane Dennis is located about 130 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and about 165 miles south of Guantanamo, Cuba. Sustained winds have now reached 105 mph, making Dennis a Category 2 hurricane with additional strengthening forecast over the next 24 hours. Hurricane force winds extend outward 25 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 125 miles from the center. The latest minimum central pressure measured was 968 mb. Dennis has moved more slowly than expected over the past few hours, toward the northwest at around 10 mph. However a west-northwest motion at around 13 mph is forecast by the National Hurricane Center (NHC). On that track, Dennis is expected to be over Jamaica this afternoon. Rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches are expected across Hispaniola, Jamaica, eastern Cuba and the Cayman Islands, though some localized mountainous areas in Jamaica may receive up to 20 inches. Given these possible rainfall amounts, flash floods and mudslides are possible. A hurricane warning is in effect for the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and eastern Cuba. A hurricane watch remains in effect for portions of central and eastern Cuba. AIR continues to monitor Hurricane Dennis closely and will provide an update within the next 24 hours.
