Pre-Landfall 3 | Summary
Posting Date: July 7, 2005, 12:00:00 PM
At 2:00 p.m. EDT, Thursday, July 7, Hurricane Dennis is centered about 65 miles northeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and about 105 miles south-southwest of Guantanamo, Cuba. Dennis is now packing sustained winds of 110 mph, putting it just below the threshold of a Category 3 hurricane. Additional strengthening is forecast over the next 24 hours.
The reported minimum central pressure was 962 mb. Hurricane force winds extend outward 45 miles from the center with tropical storm force winds reaching up to 140 miles from the center. The AIR tropical cyclone team has run scenarios using the most current information about the storm’s meteorological parameters and projected track. Based on the results of these scenarios, AIR expects insured losses for Jamaica not to be significant.
Dennis continues to move toward the northwest at around 15 mph. The forecast by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) calls for this general motion to continue over the next 24 hours.
Dennis has already dumped heavy rains across Haiti and rivers in the Dominican Republic have swelled and burst their banks. Rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches are expected across Hispaniola, Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands, though some localized mountainous areas in Jamaica may receive up to 15 inches. Given these possible rainfall amounts, flash floods and mudslides are possible.
A hurricane warning is in effect for Haiti, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and most of Cuba. A hurricane watch is in effect for the Florida Keys from Ocean Reef southward and a tropical storm watch is in effect for the southern Florida peninsula.
AIR continues to monitor Hurricane Dennis closely and will provide a further update within the next 24 hours.
