Pre-Landfall 1 | Summary
Posting Date: July 14, 2005, 10:00:00 AM
After maintaining tropical storm status for two days, Emily was upgraded to hurricane status Wednesday night and as of 11 a.m. EDT, Thursday, July 14, Emily is a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 100 mph. Emily is currently located about 560 miles southeast of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Minimum central pressure is currently estimated at 976 mb. Hurricane force winds extend out to 35 miles and tropical storm force winds extend out to 105 miles. Emily continues to move toward the west-northwest at around 18 mph.
The governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic have issued tropical storm watches for portions of those countries. A tropical storm warning is in effect for northern Venezuela and the offshore islands. The government of Trinidad & Tobago has discontinued their tropical storm warning.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) expects the storm to further strengthen over the next 24 hours as it continues along its west-northwesterly track. Emily is expected to drop 3 to 6 inches of rain on the Windward Islands, northern Venezuela and the Netherlands Antilles, with possible isolated mountainous areas receiving up to 12 inches of rain.
Still a tropical storm as Emily approached the island of Tobago yesterday afternoon, about 500 residents were moved to shelters from the north and east parts of the island. Emily’s center passed within 10 miles of Tobago yesterday evening, temporarily closing the airport but causing minimal damage across the island. The storm caused some roof damage and toppled trees in Barbados, but overall damage was reported to be light.
AIR continues to monitor this storm and will post further updates as necessary.
