Pre-Landfall 6 | Summary
Posting Date: September 23, 2005, 6:00:00 AM
As of 5:00 EDT this morning, Friday, September 23, Rita is a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of near 140 mph and higher gusts. Minimum central pressure is 927 mb.
The center of the system is located about 290 miles southeast of Galveston and about 250 miles southeast of Cameron, Texas. Rita is moving west-northwest at 9 mph. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 85 miles from the center of the storm.
A hurricane warning is in effect from Port O’Connor, Texas to Morgan City, Louisiana. A tropical storm warning is in effect from the southeastern coast of Louisiana east of Morgan City to the mouth of the Pearl River including metropolitan New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain and south of Port O’Connor to Port Mansfield, Texas. The NHC has warned that a storm surge of up to 20 feet in some areas is possible. Rainfall accumulations of up to 15 inches are expected.
At least 15 major refineries along the Texas coast were closed in Corpus Christi, Port Arthur, Houston, and some parts of Louisiana.
Rita is expected to turn more toward the north and make landfall on the upper Texas coast sometime tomorrow morning. It is important to note that there is still considerable uncertainty with respect to both the future track and intensity of this storm.
Both “All” and “Select” event sets are provided for CATRADER and CLASIC/2 users. The “All” event sets contains hundreds of scenarios simulated for this event and are therefore the most appropriate method for estimating your potential losses. Sets of 11 specific scenarios, which are selected from the full event sets and represent the range of potential losses across the full industry loss distribution, are available under the “Select” event sets.
AIR is monitoring Hurricane Rita closely and will post additional information as the storm progresses.
