Landfall | Summary
Posting Date: October 3, 2005, 10:30:00 AM
Typhoon Longwang, which means Dragon King in Chinese, made landfall as a Category 4 storm near the city of Hualien in eastern Taiwan on October 2 at 05:15 local time. Wind gusts of up to 140 mph were reported, the highest recorded on the island in 45 years. High winds were accompanied by heavy rain and high waves.
The eye of the typhoon made landfall at Feng-ping, a town in the eastern Hualien county. The storm then tracked across central Taiwan before moving out into the Taiwan Straight, making a second landfall in eastern China as a weak Category 1 typhoon.
Longwang reportedly killed two people and injured about 100 others in Taiwan. The storm cut power to more than 760,000 households, ripped roofs off homes and damaged vehicles. Air traffic was grounded and rail services were also canceled. The storm dumped more than 12 inches of rain in some areas.
The AIR tropical cyclone team has run simulations using information about the meteorological parameters and rainfall accumulations for this storm. Results indicate that insured losses should not exceed USD 50 million.
